Visited: Intelligence Squared - Ideas to Change the World @ Royal Geographers Society

The pioneering work done by the scientists at the Oxford Martin School promises to transform our world – to prolong our life-spans, enhance our brains, conquer food scarcity and solve the climate change problem. How do they propose to take us to this Brave New World and what nasty surprises might they unleash as they prise open Pandora’s box?
In this conference, organised jointly by the Oxford Martin School and Intelligence Squared, four of the school’s most brilliant experts will be showcasing their vision of the future before addressing challenges from you, the audience, about the potential perils that such visions may bring with them.
After a scene-setting presentation by Dr Ian Goldin, in which he will lay out a vision for the world in 2020, the evening will be divided in to two halves:
TRANSFORMING HUMANS
Why accept frailty as part of the human condition when science is poised to keep us healthy and sane? Dr Bennett Foddy will present the case for biological enhancement of the human body. Should we embrace therapeutic cloning and genetic manipulation so that we can live longer and healthier lives, or is this eugenics by another name? As for the human brain, Professor Gero Miesenböckwill tell us how his cutting-edge work in the new science of optogenetics – developing genetic strategies for observing and controlling the function of brain circuits with light – can help us understand our brains and potentially manipulate them. What are the ethical problems we’ll be facing if these visions of ‘mind control’ are fulfilled?
TRANSFORMING THE ENVIRONMENT
No less revolutionary are the ideas being put forward to transform the world in which we live. Professor Liam Dolan will be arguing that new techniques for manipulating crop genes hold the key to increasing yields and alleviating concerns about global food security. Professor Gideon Henderson will explain how the global warming problem could be solved by manipulating the natural system of the oceans to make them take up more carbon. GM crops. Altering the patterns of nature. Are these our route to survival or will we be unleashing unstoppable changes in the environment that we – or future generations – may live to regret?

Visited: The Future of Design Talk @ W+K, London
??25th May - The Event Space at Weiden + Kennedy, London played host to The Future of Design, an open discussion with 6 designers. Including Ben Terrett, Mark Holt, Stuart Watson (VentureThree), Marina Waller (Wolff Olins), Carl Burgess (More Soon) and Mills (ustwo™).
So, I thought this talk would be about "the future of design" but in fact every designer who talked just did a retrospective presentation of their own work. I thought this was quite shallow of them especially given the title of the event but also as people who work in such as fast paced industry like advertising. I actually felt as though they had very little interest in, not only, how the advertising industry was developing but also, for example, how developments in technology would maybe affect them and the industry in the future (seeing as this is such a massively influential factor in their line of work). If anything I think it just made me think that designers in advertising have a very simplistic view of the world, 'consumers' / people and clients they serve. The work presented was quite nice but this was a pretty boring talk and I was expecting a lot more.

The moon life foundation - Alicia Framis
Director of Moon Life Foundation, Alicia Framis speculates on the possibility that humans will live in space in the future. The project acts as a stimulus for artists, designers, architects to create futuristic radical political but humane concepts for an extreme lunar environment.
Alicia Framis is also the Lost Astronaut – an performance-installation at APF LAB, exploring the potentialities of living on the moon through the ironical activities and fictional character of a woman astronaut. Left on earth like all women who were never part of the moon race, she settles in to BaseCamp, in which she lived for the two weeks in a customized astronaut suit, among drawings and prototypes that aim to both parody and demand women’s presence on the moon.
Alicia Framis studied Fine Arts at the Barcelona University and Ecole de Beaux Arts in Paris. She completed her masters at the Institut d’Hautes Etudes, Paris and at the Rijksakademie Van Beelde Kunstende, Amsterdam.
Who Owns Outer Space? - Dr Jill Stuart
While the 'Martians Chronicles' might soon become real facts, Dr Jill Stuart will be discussing with us the ownership of space, so that we know where to land! She will explain us the history of cosmic governance and the future of outer space law.
Dr Jill Stuart is Fellow in Global Politics at the London School of Economics, and reviews editor for the journal Global Policy. She researches law, politics and theory of outer space exploration and exploitation. Her interests extend to the way terrestrial politics and conceptualisations such as sovereignty are projected into outer space, and how outer space potentially plays a role in reconstituting how those politics and conceptualisations are understood in terrestrial politics.
On observatories and observing - Jem Finer
Come along and meet with one of our space genies, Jem Finer who experienced zero gravity and realized a 1000-year long musical composition (Longplayer), as well as being artist in residence in the astrophysics department at Oxford University making a number of works including two sculptural observatories, Landscope and The Centre of the Universe.
The 'Gravitational Theater'- Julijonas Urbonas
Julijonas will talk about unique aesthetic manifestations of gravity in our highly technologised culture, from anti-gravitational shoes to deadly roller coasters.
Having worked in amusement park development – as an architect, ride designer and head of fairground – Urbonas became fascinated by what he calls the bodily-perceived aesthetics of ‘gravitational theatre’. Since then the topic has been at the core of his creative life, from artistic work to scholarly articles. Most recently this interest has matured into his PhD research based in the department of Design Interactions at the RCA.
The series is programmed by Nelly Ben Hayoun and Nahum Mantra.
